Our Verdict:

Surfshark has firmly established itself in the VPN arena, offering good speeds, unlimited connections, a clean and user-friendly Windows application, and a wide distribution of servers. It also provides some convenient extra privacy features. All of these are bundled into an affordable package, making Surfshark a value-packed VPN choice for most people.

Over the past few years, Surfshark has evolved from a basic VPN company into a one-stop shop for personal online security services. The company now offers a top-tier VPN product that continuously improves with each new iteration. Since merging with NordVPN under the Cyberspace parent company, Surfshark has been committed to developing cutting-edge personal security features through its Nexus technology. All of this sounds great, but are all these features in a VPN service really worth it? We tested Surfshark to find out the answer.

Surfshark VPN Features and Services

When you first open Surfshark, you’ll find a clean and simple interface. On the left sidebar, you can select VPN, Alerts, Antivirus, and Settings. In the center, there’s a list of all server locations alphabetically by country/region, and on the right, there’s a button to connect to the selected server. It’s nothing fancy, but the minimalist, straightforward interface is easy to navigate and use.

Surfshark prides itself on the number of servers it offers, boasting over 3,200 servers distributed across 100 different countries/regions. Granted, many countries/regions have only one server available for connection, but more popular regions like the US, Canada, and Australia offer multiple server locations scattered around. In addition to all these server options, Surfshark also allows unlimited simultaneous device connections. This is a significant draw, as most other VPN providers limit subscribers to five or six simultaneous connections.

Surfshark-main-screen

Surfshark’s application is clean and easy to navigate.

Above the available servers on the main screen, you have three options to choose from: Locations, StaticIP, and MultiHop. Locations display a list of all available country/region servers you can connect to. StaticIP allows you to connect to shared servers with IP addresses that never change. MultiHop enables you to route traffic through multiple external servers, further obfuscating your actual location. While many VPN services now offer multi-hop connections, what sets Surfshark apart is that users can not only choose from preset routes but also create their own multi-hop routes. This is a fantastic feature that provides advanced users and privacy-conscious individuals with more autonomy in securing and optimizing their connections.

Surfshark-Antivirus-1

Surfshark VPN subscription also includes access to the company’s antivirus software.

Surfshark also offers an ad, tracker, and malware blocker called CleanWeb, although it is not enabled by default. It also provides a feature called “Whitelister,” a split tunneling feature that allows you to choose whether to route certain applications and websites through the VPN or keep them separate connections. This is a nice option for users who want to ensure secure web browsing through VPN while keeping online gaming outside of the VPN connection to minimize potential latency issues.

Additionally, Surfshark offers a kill switch feature that automatically disables your internet connection if your VPN connection drops for any reason. There’s also a feature called NoBorders, enabled by default, which is its own version of obfuscated servers. NoBorders allows users from countries/regions that typically restrict VPN connections to maintain access to Surfshark.

Overall, it’s a well-designed application, easy to navigate, with a good feature set and plenty of useful tools. The only issue we found with this service is that there’s no straightforward way to find ping times or server load indicators while browsing connections. We eventually found this information in the options menu under speed tests, but having this information listed under each server location would be convenient.

While many VPN services now offer multi-hop connections, what sets Surfshark apart is that users can not only choose from preset routes but also create their own multi-hop routes.

Surfshark-Speed-test

You can view the load and ping of each server by running a speed test in the Surfshark client.

Surfshark is also striving to bring new innovative ideas to the VPN scene. It plans to launch its exclusive Nexus VPN network in 2023. Nexus is a single network consisting of Surfshark VPN servers. This technology can greatly enhance security and privacy. It will allow IP rotation without disconnecting your active VPN connection, further obfuscating your browsing activity. Nexus will also utilize dynamic multi-hop functionality to connect you to the fastest available entry server and exit at any desired location, optimizing connection speeds comprehensively. As of the time of writing, only the IP rotator feature is available, with the full feature set set to be released later this year.

How does Surfshark VPN perform?

During testing, we rated the connection speeds of Surfshark servers in five different countries globally and compared them to our benchmark internet speed. Surfshark server speeds, while not particularly outstanding, are stable. Their average download speeds are slightly higher than the base download speeds at 61%, with a slightly more impressive 72% for average upload speeds. While not the best we’ve seen, it should be sufficient to stream HD video without any issues depending on your home internet.

For those looking to bypass geographical restrictions on streaming websites, our tests showed that Surfshark has been hugely successful. The VPN unlocked all content on every server we tested and on all major streaming services, including Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Max, Hulu, and Disney Plus. This result places Surfshark alongside NordVPN and ExpressVPN as one of the top VPNs we recommend for streaming Netflix.

Security and privacy with Surfshark VPN

Surfshark claims not to collect any of your online activities, including browsing history, session information, bandwidth usage, connection timestamps, network traffic, or IP addresses. This no-logs policy statement was verified by Deloitte during an independent audit of Surfshark at the end of 2022. These are precisely the steps users should expect from a top VPN company, and it largely backs up Surfshark’s privacy claims.

The service also prioritizes privacy during setup. When registering for a Surfshark subscription, you only need to provide an email address. Additionally, the company accepts payments via credit card, PayPal, Google Pay, and various cryptocurrencies.

It’s worth noting that in recent years, Surfshark has moved its headquarters from the British Virgin Islands to the Netherlands. While this shouldn’t be too much of an issue as the Netherlands’ data retention laws are generally privacy-friendly, the Netherlands is still under the jurisdiction of the Nine Eyes alliance, meaning the government can compel Surfshark to share certain information about its customers.

Surfshark offers multiple protocols, including OpenVPN, WireGuard, and IKEv2.

In terms of security, Surfshark uses standard AES 256-bit encryption. It also provides options for various VPN protocols, including OpenVPN, WireGuard, and IKEv2, depending on your operating system.

Is Surfshark VPN worth it?

Surfshark provides unlimited device connections, good speeds, compatibility with major streaming services, and an impressive number of country/server connections. The Windows application is well-designed and easy to understand. It also has some nice additional features such as ad, tracker, and malware blocking, as well as split tunneling and multi-hop.

With all these excellent features, Surfshark is a reliable all-around VPN service. If you opt for a two-year contract, you can also get all of this at a low price. With the addition of the future Nexus network, Surfshark has the potential to surpass its main competitors in the market. Overall, whether it’s bypassing regional blocks or just enjoying a more private, secure browsing experience, Surfshark remains one of our favorites.
